GOP senator tweets his approval of the stimulus bill element — but there is just one problem

One Republican senator's contradictory stance toward the new COVID relief bill has left many people scratching their heads. According to The New York Times, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) on Wednesday, March 10 tweeted his approval of the $1.9 trillion stimulus package describing it as a win for the restaurant industry and a substantial survival measure for small businesses.

"Independent restaurant operators have won $28.6 billion worth of targeted relief," Wicker tweeted." This funding will ensure small businesses can survive the pandemic by helping to adapt their operations and keep their employees on the payroll."

However, shortly after tweeting his approval, he revealed to reports that he had no intention to vote in favor of the bill. "I'm not going to vote for $1.9 trillion just because it has a couple of good provisions," Wicker later told reporters.

Following his remarks to reporters, Wicker's Twitter post garnered thousands of responses from social media users who pointed out the sheer contradiction in his post and his spoken words.

One Twitter user lambasted Wicker describing him as a "shameless hypocrite." She tweeted, "You literally VOTED AGAINST THIS you shameless hypocrite. NO. You don't get any credit. Not an ounce. And by the way, this is what patriarchy looks like - men taking credit for what other people do."

Democratic lawmakers have also fired back at Wicker highlighting the discrepancy in their refusal to vote in favor of the bill. Rep. Debbie Dingell, (D-Mich.) tweeted her grievances about Wicker and other Republican lawmakers.

Dingell tweeted, "I worked with restaurants in my district for almost a year to secure aid they desperately need. Republican senators, including [Senator Wicker], rejected this critical aid. Too many have closed & many more are suffering. Just happy we got them help today despite his objections."

The COVID relief package passed on partisan lines without any Republican lawmakers voting in favor of it.
