President Joe Biden speaks of protecting 'freedom and democracy at large' after arriving in Kyiv

President Joe Biden made a surprise trip to the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv on Monday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the one-year anniversary of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion approaches.

Biden delivered remarks following his arrival, noting that this is his eighth time in Kyiv and that "much has changed" since his last visit. Biden also commended the Ukrainians' resolve in their fight against Russia.

"They stepped up in a way that few people ever have" and "embraced the notion of democracy, no longer discussions about whether or not certain privileged people have control," Biden said.

"And, uh, you know, I bring greetings and goodwill from members of Congress – a very good impression when you spoke there last – and for all disagreement, we have in our Congress on some issues, there is a significant agreement for support of Ukraine. Cause this is so much larger than just Ukraine," Biden continued. "It's about freedom and democracy Europe. It's about freedom and democracy at large, and all the American people, I, I know that, so many have kept, the Ukrainian people, particularly women and children, in their prayers. They see what's happening. They can't fathom the idea of the shelling at night and the shelling of orphanages too, to schools, like it's barbaric, and I'm here to show support for the nation's independence, your sovereignty, and territorial integrity."
