No to Noem: GOP gov 'formally' banned from '10 percent of the lands in her home state'

Less than a week after South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem was banned from visiting the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation, the GOP leader was banned Tuesday from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe's reservation, according to The Daily Beast.

Noem, who Donald Trump is considering on his list of potential vice president candidates, has now officially been banned from visiting three Indigenous reservations — as the governor was also banned from the Oglala Sioux Tribe's land last month.

Per the Beast, the Republican leader is "now legally barred from visiting some 10 percent of the lands in her home state—and can be thrown out of those areas if she violates the order."

The bans come after comments Noem made during a recent town hall, according to the report, alleging that Native American tribal leaders are connected to Mexican drug cartels.

According to Dakota News Nob, "Noem stated, at a Winner, (South Dakota) town hall on March 13, that she believes tribal leaders are 'personally benefiting' from drug cartels. At a town hall in Mitchell, she said tribal children 'don't have parents who show up and help them,' and tribal members 'have a tribal council or a president who focuses on a political agenda more than they care about actually helping somebody's life look better.'"

Noem also said drug cartels are responsible for murders on the reservation and that they’re affiliated with a gang called the 'Ghost Dancers' — which takes its name from a Native American religious ceremony. Historically, U.S. and state officials viewed the Ghost Dance as a threat of violence and sought to ban it, prompting a painful period of history.

Following Noem's April 5 ban from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, chairman Ryman LeBeau said, "The South Dakota governor speaks gossip and lies about our Lakota students, their parents and our tribal councils. (The) SD governor's statements made on March 13, 2024 perpetuate stereotypes, misconceptions, which are inaccurate and untrue."

Politico reported in September that when asked about the potential of being picked as Trump's running mate, the GOP governor "told Fox News 'of course, I would consider it.'"
