Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's (R-Ga.) remarks at a recent speaking engagement in Alabama have led to critical reactions on Twitter. On August 3, Greene visited Dothan, Ala., to speak at an event for the Alabama Federation of Republican Women.
During her speech, the right-wing lawmaker claimed workers involved in the Biden administration's door-to-door COVID vaccine initiative "might not like the welcome they get" because "in the South, we all love our Second Amendment rights," according to Al.com. The "campaign" is carried out by the COVID-19 Community Corps, which consists "largely of volunteers, advocacy groups, corporations, and local community organizations," reported Healthline.
At one point during her speech, she even commended the ladies for their state having the lowest COVID vaccination rate in the country.
"You lucky people in Alabama might get a knock on your door because I hear Alabama might be one of the most unvaccinated states in the nation," Greene told the audience who responded by cheering.
"Well, Joe Biden wants to come talk to you guys," she added.
"Yeah, well, what they don't know is in the South we all love our Second Amendment rights," she added. "And we're not real big on strangers showing up at our front door, are we? They might not like the welcome they get."
Although the crowd cheered Greene on, that wasn't the reaction she got when the video of her speech began circulating on Twitter. Many Twitter users lambasted Greene for her remarks as they expressed concern about the possible mistreatment of people participating in the door-to-door campaign.
According to Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) Greene appeared to encourage violence by alluding to the idea of harming someone who knocks on residents' front door.
"We are watching the radicalization of the Republican Party in real time. GOP Rep @mtgreenee is encouraging violence," Lieu tweeted, adding, "(FYI: It's murder to shoot someone for knocking on your door). How many Republican Members of Congress will condemn her insane remarks?"
