Chuck Todd: Hunter Biden 'exhaustion' may trigger 'a competitive Democratic primary'

NBC News moderator Chuck Todd, after speaking with United States Representative Dean Phillips (D-Minnesota) on Sunday's edition of Meet the Press, believes that the federal investigations into President Joe Biden's son Hunter could create an opening for a "serious" Democrat to challenge Biden for their party's nomination in next year's presidential election.

Todd predicts that while twice-impeached thrice-indicted former President Donald Trump "is gonna be completely distracted by his courtroom issues and his legal dramas," Biden will likewise be preoccupied with his child's troubles, which Todd says "are going to become problems for voters. I think when you sit here with swing voters, there's an exhaustion. There's no doubt that I think Trump has a lot more exhaustion than that."

Attorney General Merrick Garland's Friday appointment of David C. Weiss as special counsel in the Hunter Biden inquiry "only reinforces the need to have a competitive Democratic primary," Todd explains.

"I do think this will open the door for a more serious Democrat to think about running," Todd continues.

"I'm not saying it's definitely gonna happen. I mean, right now the primary challengers to Joe Biden are not serious people," Todd adds, "but somebody could get in, especially if there is some moment in the fall where questions about his ability to serve crop up again."
