Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on "Fox & Friends" Thursday to discuss the recent anger over her advertising campaign telling folks to get back to work and stop living off of the government dime.
The ad that she promoted was of a young man named "Brad," who was flopped in a beanbag chair playing video games and reaching for chips with a claw.
"He's turned relaxing into a full-time profession," Sanders quips in the ad as the young man appears with a giant tub of cheese balls.
The Arkansas governor has drawn backlash from some on the right who feel young white men are being unfairly targeted as lazy.
The video of "Brad" was enough to offend Matt Walsh, who attacked Sanders for the ad, saying: "This Republican ad calling out welfare leeches uses a young white male named 'Brad' as the villain. Meanwhile, back in reality, women are significantly more likely to be on welfare than men. And Black people are astronomically more likely to be on welfare than white people. So the number of single young white male 'Brads' abusing the welfare system is minuscule. Practically non-existent. But of course Republicans don't have the balls to do this ad with 'Shaniqua' as the villain. Even though that would actually be an accurate portrayal of the problem at hand."
Turning Point USA also lashed out, demanding to have a real conversation about who is "fleecing welfare."
In fact, according to the most recent USDA report covering fiscal year 2023, the vast majority of recipients of welfare are white people (43 percent).
Many of the men argued that women are more likely to be on welfare, but they neglected to mention that it's because those women are the ones who've been abandoned to care for children, a University of Massachusetts report explained.
"Well, I think it is overblown and incredibly manufactured. In Arkansas, we are working hard to make sure that the system isn't being cheated," Sanders told Fox. "We know that there are a variety of different people who, instead of working, are choosing not to and are getting government benefits. That's not how the system was designed."
She said that the GOP has worked hard to get requirements in place to show that people are working and not merely living off of the government.
"Instead of conservatives attacking other conservatives, they should be supporting that policy, not only helping us get that job done but helping get more Republicans elected so we can take it even further and continue to fix a very, broken, system," Sanders continued.
She said she doesn't care if conservatives criticize her because she's getting things done.
