Amal Clooney Is Worried about Trump and Could Be the Legal Force to Take Him On

Donald Trump is so scary and weird that he even has Amal Clooney (arguably the most poised and calm looking woman I have ever seen) nervous. On Tuesday, while speaking at the Texas Conference for Women, Amal Clooney said she’s worried about Trump’s America and civil rights. And not just American rights, but international human rights. And she’s totally right — his proposals are a threat to everything democratic societies have been working toward for centuries.

Everyone should listen to her warnings, because she’s absolutely brilliant. But she’s a British-Lebanese woman married to George Clooney, and even though she’s a renowned human rights lawyer, most of the news about her, even this appearance and speech originally, has to do with her clothes (don’t get me wrong, those suits are really something; but she has more to say). So, I don’t think Trump and his posse of angry, bloated white men are going to worry too much about her opinions.

It’s a shame, because she’s right. “That there should be a religious test imposed on entering the U.S. or the fact that there should be state-sponsored torture or that families of suspected terrorists should all be killed, all of those things are violations of international human rights law and the values that underlie that,” she said at the conference.

But then she did what so many other people have been doing — giving this dude a shot. “We have to hope for the best. The president-elect has said that fighting ISIS is actually a priority … so it may be that there can be progress, and obviously everyone has to respect the outcome of the democratic process here, and we have to hope for the best, ” she added.

Her statements could be taken as a warning to the Trump administration, though. Clooney takes on very high profile cases  — one of her clients is Julian Assange and she has sued ISIS for genocide — and it could have been a way to give the president-elect a head’s up that she’s not afraid to bring charges against him if he breaks international laws. Suing the American government may not be easy, but neither is suing ISIS. She’s also represented Cambodia against Thailand and Georgia against Russia, so she’s no stranger to suing nations. Clooney’s worked in The Hague and is a member of the London and New York bar. If anyone has the guts to take down what’s shaping up to be an American autocracy, maybe it’s Amal Clooney.
