Top George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove flagged a big warning for Republicans as the election draws closer.
Rove, who worked to help Bush get elected in Texas in 1994 and 1998, told Fox host Dana Perino that Democrats Texas is a much bigger election than Michigan, where Republicans could score a pick-up.
"James Talarico making this concentrated effort against Ken Paxton. Ken Paxton not, as I understand it, raising as much money as he should. Maybe not on the campaign trail as much as he could be and pummeled by negative ads. So is that a true toss-up?" she asked Rove.
"I think it is. The state is Republican in nature, but this is an unusual race," Rove explained. "You are right. Talarico, I think, had over $70 million raised, and Paxton had $9 million plus. And you are right. The week before the Fourth of July, he was in Iceland with his new girlfriend. On July 4th, a day where he could be campaigning at Fourth of July celebrations all across Texas, he was in London."
Rove said that Paxton must "get out on the campaign trail." Meanwhile, he doesn't expect Paxton to do much better when it comes to fundraising.
"So this is going to be one that will depend mightily upon the decision of President Trump to spend or not spend the half a billion-plus dollars that he has in his two super PACs, MAGA, Inc. and Never Surrender. If he does spend, he can even it up. If he doesn’t spend, this could be a really bad night for Republicans in Texas."
Rove isn't the only one noticing just how bad of a campaign Paxton is running. Former Republican and ex-Homeland Security chief of staff, Miles Taylor, called the Paxton campaign "terrible."
"I will also say that Ken Paxton has been running the most embarrassing campaign I've seen in a long time," said Taylor.
"The guy is running from the press, literally. They keep trying to hide him. They refuse to take questions," continued Taylor. "You don't need to look at the polls in Texas. It's bad for Paxton, right? In deep red Texas, he should be kicking James Tallarico's a——. He's not. A number of polls show Talarico up by as much as four points in some cases. This is a big deal in a red state."
Politico reported last month that Trump reached $400 million in his combined accounts thanks, in part, to "NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and billionaires Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss." The total amount raised year-to-date is nearly $100 million.
A review of the spending from the PACs revealed that Trump is spending his money on donations to candidates, consulting fees, bank fees, credit card payments, an online fundraising platform, and an event photographer, the FEC filings read.
