Melania Trump has effectively "abdicated" her role as first lady, according to her husband's one-time biographer, highlighting her recent comments after a long absence as proof.
Michael Wolff is a longtime reporter and author best known for his extensive coverage of President Donald Trump's political career, including a series of books about his tumultuous first term. In the latest episode of his Daily Beast podcast, "Inside Trump's Head," he and co-host Joanna Coles discussed Melania Trump's recent appearance at an event for her Fostering the Future Initiative, marking her first public appearance in several weeks.
“I heard you missed me. Here I am,” the first lady said. “Here I am! Welcome to the White House.”
Wolff suggested that this seemingly innocuous remark hid something darker.
“I would just like to say that there is a fine line between a tease and a taunt,” he explained. “And I think she has gone over it and that this is actually a taunt. ‘You know I’m not here, I know I’m not here, everybody knows I’m not here, but f—— you.’”
Coles asked if the taunt was directed at the public or her husband, to which Wolff argued it was both.
“I think it is to everybody and also to the president,” Wolff added. “She comes and goes as she pleases. She’s unregulated. She is defying, or maybe the better word is, she’s abdicating the official first lady role, which is to be a model of domestic propriety and to do good works. So she’s clearly not the model of domestic propriety, to say the very least.”
As The Daily Beast previously detailed in an extensive audit of Melania Trump's public appearance, the first lady's schedule has been drastically cut back during her husband's second term. When the results were published on August 9, the outlet found that she had only made 38 public appearances so far in 2026, having last appeared at that point in mid-July, accompanying her husband to the World Cup. The results also found that she had "not come close to appearing publicly on 100 days in the more than year and a half of [Trump's] presidency."
This schedule marked a sharp break with the traditional schedule followed by past first ladies, like Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden.
Wolff argued further that the event she recently appeared at, celebrating the expansion of her program after a $2 million donation from the Fox Corporation and Roger Penske's IndyCar, was more concerned with corporate interests rather than the public good.
“Theoretically, she was in Washington to make an announcement about good works she was supporting, but it’s a weird kind of corporate interaction, a sponsorship,” he explained. “Really, what this was is a promotional event for Penske, for a corporate interest, the Penske family corporate interests.”
Wolff added: “So what she has interposed herself in—and she has been out there actually cultivating sponsors for herself, for her own business. So really her official job, the official part of being a first lady to do good works, she has converted into private enterprise for herself. That’s what she spends most of her time on: monetizing this theoretical—and highly theoretical role—that she has as the first lady and the wife of Donald Trump.”
