Longtime activist and Democratic politician Tom Hayden, known for his participation Chicago 8 trial and Vietnam War protests passed away Sunday at age 76.

Before his death, Hayden was vocal about the 2016 presidential race, surprising even some lifelong allies with his voting choices. "I Used to Support Bernie, but Then I Changed My Mind," Hayden wrote in The Nation in April, in which he explained why he would be supporting Hillary Clinton in the California Primary. 

But what's even more surprising is Hayden's once unlikely friendship with the GOP nominee.

"You're not allowed to shout fire in a crowded theater, my goodness that's what [Trump] does every night," Hayden said on Al Jazeera in March.

"I don't know if it's entertaining to him, but he's promoting a 'strong man' personality that is going to appear very dangerous, I'm saying to even middle of the road voters, but he's trying to provoke something and I wish he would call it off."

Hayden then urged protesters not to provoke Trump but to indict him for incitement. He also had a poignant message for the nominee.

"I used to know this Donald Trump," Hayden told Al Jazeera.

"Donald you remember me? I went skiing with you," he said as if speaking directly to Trump. "I know you."

"But," Hayden pointed, turning back to third person, "He's run a campaign that caters to the most dangerous elements in our society, insulted black people by the referencing to the Ku Klux Klan, women by his attacks on Megyn Kelly, journalists by his vows to slug somebody to get them off the stage, he's inciting people... it is a crime."
