Video shows Josh Hawley running to evade the rioters he had earlier praised

On Thursday night, July 21, the bipartisan select committee on the January 6, 2021 insurrection held a prime-time hearing that focused heavily on former President Donald Trump’s activities when the U.S. Capitol Building was under attack. One of the things that the committee, chaired by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi and co-chaired by conservative Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, brought up was the actions of Sen. Josh Hawley that day — and just how contradictory they were.

Hawley, a far-right MAGA Republican, has been a promoter of the Big Lie: the false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump through widespread voter fraud. On January 6, 2021, before the Capitol was invaded, Hawley could be seen raising his fist in solidarity with the insurrectionists — and during the July 21 hearing, the select committee showed that image on a large screen.

But that familiar image, during the committee’s presentation, was followed by a very different image of Hawley: one that showed the Missouri Republican and Trump loyalist running away after the insurrectionists had violently invaded the Capitol. Members of Congress attending the hearing broke out in laughter upon seeing the contrasts of the “bold,” pro-insurrectionist Hawley, with his fist raised, and an obviously frightened Hawley subsequently running as fast as he could to get away from the violent MAGA insurrectionists he had praised earlier.

After journalist Dan Przygoda tweeted the Hawley footage, there was no shortage of Twitter users who were anxious to mock Hawley. And some of them did so by combining the video of Hawley running inside the Capitol with a variety of famous themes, from Vangelis’ “Chariots of Fire” to the “Gonna Fly Now” theme from 1976’s Philadelphia classic “Rocky.”

In a July 21 tweet, Never Trump conservative Rick Wilson, a former GOP strategist, made his disdain for Hawley obvious when he posted, “I don’t know who put that Hawley hit out, but right now his tiny testicles are a hood ornament on Liz Cheney‘s SUV.”
