Trump vows to repeal part of his own tax cut in bid to win over New Yorkers

Former President Donald Trump has come up with a novel way to improve voters' lives by vowing to repeal part of his signature legislative achievement.

Writing on his Truth Social platform, the former president announced he was having a campaign rally at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum and then proceeded to paint a dystopian view of the United States as a nation with "Crime at record levels, Terrorists pouring in, Inflation eating your hearts out."

In fact, crime over the last two years has been falling steadily after spiking during the final year of Trump's administration, inflation has now fallen below 3 percent, and there is no evidence to back up claims that "terrorists are pouring in" to the country.

However, it's the next part of Trump's post that is of interest from a public policy perspective.

"I will turn it around, get SALT back, lower your Taxes, and so much more," Trump wrote.

"SALT" refers to a federal deduction for state and local taxes that was repealed as part of House Republicans' 2017 tax cut bill.

The removal of the state and local taxes deduction received criticism at the time as a punishment for residents of blue states who typically have higher taxes than residents of red states.

Many swing-district Democrats in states such as New York and New Jersey won elections in 2018 while pledging to bring back the SALT deduction that Trump and his Republican congressional allies repealed.
