Trump’s former AG warns a second term would be 'chaotic' and rife with 'abuse of government power'

Bill Barr, who served as attorney general under then-President Donald Trump's Department of Justice, is sounding the alarm about what could happen if his former boss is elected to a second term in the White House.

On Saturday, Barr told Fox News' Neil Cavuto that if reelected, the former president would likely create a 'chaotic' environment at the DOJ and would feel emboldened to pursue politically motivated prosecutions and weaponize government agencies against his ideological opponents. He also said that political appointees should be prepared to resign if Trump orders them to break the law.

"I think for people going into that administration. I think they have to be ready to oppose the abuse of government power," Barr said.

The former US attorney general revealed that he was able to control Trump's worst impulses by warning him of political consequences. However, he said a term-limited Trump would be akin to a "lame duck" administration, as he would no longer be constrained by the need to placate voters.

"Trump needs people around him who will push back and help keep him on the straight and narrow," Barr said. "Once he wins a second term, I don’t know you know what considerations can be used to push back against bad ideas."

Barr suggested to Cavuto that former UN ambassador Nikki Haley would make for a stronger Republican presidential nominee in 2024, citing polls that showed her beating President Joe Biden in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup by 17 points, compared to Trump performing within the statistical margin of error.

"One of the one of the reasons I’m against Trump as the nominee is because I don’t think he’s going to move the country forward," Barr said.
