If Trump is 'exhausted' from campaigning then maybe he isn’t 'fit to do the job': Harris

The race to reach undecided voters in battleground states is on in the final weeks of the 2024 election, yet Vice President Kamala Harris is far more active on the campaign trail than former President Donald Trump.

Harris took a jab at Trump's stamina before taking the stage for a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday. Ian Sams, a campaign spokesperson for Harris, tweeted a video of her making a brief statement before her stump speech, in which she remarked on Trump backing out of multiple interviews, rallies and other campaign appearances in recent weeks due to reported "exhaustion."

"I've been hearing reported that his team, at least, is saying he's suffering from exhaustion. And that's apparently the excuse for why he's not doing interviews, and of course he's not doing the CNN town hall, he refuses to do another debate," Harris said. "And, you know, look: Being the president of the United States is probably one of the hardest jobs in the world. And so, we really do need to ask: If he's exhausted being on the campaign trail, is he fit to do the job?"

Harris' remarks come on the heels of Trump being conspicuously absent from the campaign trail and cancelling three TV interviews and multiple public appearances. Already, the former president has backed out of previously agreed-upon interviews with CNBC, 60 Minutes and NBC News, and as his opponent pointed out, refuses to do another televised debate. The CNN town hall Harris referred to was initially booked as a debate on the network before Trump backed out of it following his September 10 debate with Harris on ABC.

The ex-president is even backing out of friendly events, as he declined at the last minute to deliver the keynote speech at a National Rifle Association event in the must-win battleground state of Georgia. He also abruptly ended a podcast interview with conservative pundit Dan Bongino on the far-right platform Rumble, and backed out of a Q&A with The Shade Room's podcast, which is a large and influential platform for Black voters.

Additionally, the vice president heaped criticism on her Republican opponent after he made derogatory remarks about Michigan autoworkers. While speaking to Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait at the Chicago Economic Club earlier this week, Trump said "we could have a child" do the work done by unionized autoworkers," saying workers "take [pieces] out of a box and they assemble them."

"Again, we have a situation where the former president is insulting the people of the state this time," Harris said before her Michigan speech on Friday. "Donald Trump comes from a place where he really does not appreciate or understand how most people in our country work very hard for all that they have, and that there is great dignity in their work."

Meanwhile, Harris has been ramping up her public appearances in the final month of the campaign. After a media blitz in which she spoke to CBS' 60 Minutes, sat down with The View and gave SiriusXM radio host Howard Stern an exclusive interview, she even went on Fox News to do a hard-hitting interview with Bret Baier — the network's chief political correspondent. Harris' CNN town hall will take place next week.
