The difficult economy is causing trouble for Americans, whether or not they have a Donald Trump sticker on their car. MS NOW has spent the week speaking with voters of President Donald Trump and whether they feel like he's doing a good job.
One such mom was at the gas station when a reporter asked her about the high costs. She confessed that things are hard and she's doing the best she can for her children, but was ultimately brought to tears as she spoke.
Trump spoke in Las Vegas on Wednesday that the U.S. is in a "golden age" and that he never gets credit for all the work he's done for the country.
"In my first day, the press said, what are you going to doabout affordability? It was aword they devised: affordability," Trump said after campaigning on making things more affordable.
"They never used that wordbefore," Trump continued. "It was announced that American exports are totally onfire in a positive way. This isa positive fire, not a negative.I don't get any credit foranything. We will pass thegreat health care plan. It'scalled the great health careplan. The golden age of Americais upon us."
Speaking to the MS NOW reporter, the mom said she didn't expect the second Trump term to go this way.
"I hoped itwas going to be so much better.You know, you can't do anythingwith gas prices and you justcan't. You can't afford tobreathe at this point," she said, her voice cracking. "I'm veryhurt. I try to — sorry, I cried.I try to do a lot for my kidsand I can't do much."
Democratic strategist Mike Nellis told MS NOW he recalled Trump campaigning in 2024 about groceries. During a press conference at Bedminster, Trump stood next to a table full of items from cereal to ground beef, milk and eggs.
"I think people feelhoodwinked," said Nellis. "Like Donald Trump is acting like we justinvented the word affordability.I've heard him say the same thing about groceriesthing about groceries. He'slike, nobody ever talked aboutgroceries until I came along."
"He literally campaigned on that," host Ali Vitali said.
"He's like, I inventedthe word. I don't understand it.It's like he got elected on asingle promise, really, twopromises, but a single promiseof when I get elected,everything will get lessexpensive. And now he's actinglike, well, why did you guysthink I'd be able to getanything done on that?"
He said he felt bad for that mom, along with all of the "other people who thought that their lives were going to get better, and now they're just watching Donald Trump make billions of dollars as awful. And that's why he'sgoing to lose in November."
