'The end of shame': Politics reporter shreds GOP for letting Trump shatter 'the basic norms society follows'

A Des Moines register poll released in early October found that in Iowa — a state that Donald Trump won in both 2016 and 2020 — the former president enjoys 53% approval among the general population and 91% approval among Republicans. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, now 88, will be joining Trump at a MAGA rally in Iowa this Saturday, October 9, and CNN's Dana Bash views Grassley's ongoing support of him as proof of the stranglehold that Trump maintains on the GOP.
Bash, speaking to her CNN colleagues on October 8, explained, "The Des Moines Register came out with a poll that has Trump at 53% in Iowa, and that's just generally speaking — never mind among Republicans. And Chuck Grassley, even though he's one of the oldest senators, wants to be senator again for another term. That is, let's just be clear, a large part of what that is all about."
Bash went on to say that Grassley is operating in a very different reality from the pre-MAGA version of the Republican Party.
"The Chuck Grassley that we have covered for years, decades, is not that guy, and it's because of the realities of the Republican Party and more broadly, how it's — it's the end of shame," Bash observed. "The law is to be followed because you're worried about repercussions, but it's also kind of the basic norms that society follows. It's like when you get to a red light and no one is there, you still stop at the red light because it's what you're supposed to do. When you get a subpoena, you respond to the subpoena because that's what you're supposed to do. They don't care anymore because Donald Trump has shattered those norms… The institutions have disintegrated."
