Michigan House majority whip: 'Thoughts and prayers' are 'meaningless' following MSU mass shooting

On Monday, February 13, a shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing left three people dead and five others injured. Democratic State Rep. Ranjeev Puri, who serves as majority whip in the Michigan House of Representatives, expressed his anger and frustration in a scathing official statement issued the following day.

Puri was blunt, opening his statement by saying, "F*** your thoughts and prayers." The Michigan Democrat went on to lament that what happened at the university has become "far too common" in the United States.

"Going to school in America, whether it’s pre-school or college, means risking your life every day to the threat of a mass shooting," Puri lamented. "Yet all we have offered up are empty solutions —traumatizing active shooter drills and bulletproof backpacks."

Puri added that the U.S. is the "only country" where "mass shootings" are so common that they have "left us desensitized."

"Thoughts and prayers without action are meaningless," Puri wrote. "Our office will continue to work tirelessly to pass common sense gun reform immediately."
