'It’s dead': Texas GOP Rep. insists he'll do 'everything' to block 'unchristian' immigration bill

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX), is warning House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that he will vote against a debt ceiling deal with President Joe Biden if the House GOP backs an "unchristian" immigration bill, HuffPost reports.

The legislation, proposed by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) in January, would "give the secretary of Homeland Security the ability to shut down border crossings and detain asylum-seekers while their cases are processed in court."

During a recent interview with CBS, Gonzles said, "That bill in particular, it's dead. There's no way it's going to get on the floor. I'm gonna do everything in my power to prevent that because in my district, people are dying. And we need real solutions, not political rhetoric."

Furthermore, the congressman tweeted Wednesday, "Bring unchristian anti-immigrant bills to the floor and I am a NO on the debt ceiling."

Since Republicans have a slim five-seat majority in the House, it only takes a handful of members to alter a vote outcome — meaning Gonzales just made it harder for McCarthy to twist Biden's arm.

According to The Hill, the GOP lawmaker told reporters Wednesday, "It is pure chaos along the border in my district. I don't have time to play political games. So, I've been very clear where I stand on things. And I want a border security package, border security bill that does not attack legal routes for people to come over and isn't unchristian."
