Susan Collins called out for believing Brett Kavanaugh wouldn’t vote to overturn Roe: 'You were played'

On Monday night, May 2, Politico reported that according to a draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, the U.S. Supreme Court has decided to fully overturn Roe v. Wade — and Sen. Susan Collins, in response to Politico’s reporting, is defending her decision to vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Collins, in 2018, maintained that Kavanaugh would not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade if confirmed to the High Court, saying that he considered the 1973 decision “settled law.” And in response to Politico’s opinion, Collins said, “If this leaked draft opinion is the final decision and this reporting is accurate, it would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office.”

When CBS News’ Scott McFarlane tweeted Collins’ statement on May 3, there were plenty of responses — many of them negative and vehemently critical of the moderate conservative. Collins’ critics, in 2018, argued that she was being hopelessly naïve if she really believed that Kavanaugh wouldn’t vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. And now, it appears that Kavanaugh is doing the very thing Collins insisted he wouldn’t do.
