Schiff: Trump’s January 6th crimes are 'far more significant' than his retention of classified documents

United States Representative Adam Schiff (D-California) on Sunday urged Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith to "reach a conclusion very soon" on whether to indict former President Donald Trump for inciting the January 6th, 2021 Capitol insurrection.

Schiff also stated that Smith charging Trump would be a "far more significant" criminal matter than the thirty-seven-felony-count complaint that Smith filed against Trump last month for allegedly illegally retaining classified documents at his Palm Beach, Florida Mar-a-Lago golf club.

"You have been so close to this over the course of the last few years," MSNBC host Jen Psaki recalled to Schiff, who served on the now-disbanded bipartisan House Select Committee that investigated the Trump-inspired assault.

"As shocking as the conduct documented in the Mar-a-Lago indictment is, do you think Trump's role in January 6th is more serious? Could an indictment outlining those details be more shocking? What's your expectation?" Psaki asked.

"You know, the Mar-a-Lago indictment is pretty shocking just in terms of how premeditated Trump's misconduct is. But the January 6th issues are far more significant," Schiff opined.

"This involved the first-ever attempt by a president to interfere in the peaceful transfer of power in our country; the violent attack of thousands of people against police officers at the Capitol designed to stop the joint session from certifying the new winner of the presidential election, Joe Biden. Hard to imagine a more serious set of offenses than that," the congressman continued. "On the January 6th Committee, of course, we recommended the Justice Department, that they investigate the president's role and likely violation of multiple laws. So those are the most serious allegations Whether they will shock the conscience as much as reading the details of the Mar-a-Lago indictment, I don't know, since so much is known about Trump's misconduct. But I would hope that the special counsel will reach a conclusion very soon because I think they've taken way too long to get to where they are. We're now more than two years since those events and we need speedy justice."
