'A traitor to the Constitution': Congressman torches Jim Jordan over questionable Jan. 5 text

Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) is describing Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as a "traitor to the Constitution" following the lawmaker's confession about text messages he sent to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows prior to the Jan. 6 riots, according to HuffPost.

On Jan. 5, just one day prior to the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, Jordan texted Meadows and suggested Vice President Mike Pence (R) halt the certification of results from the 2020 presidential election. During an appearance on MSNBC News' “The Last Word,” Gallego shared his reaction to the revelation as he criticized Jordan for his actions.

“Look, Jim Jordan is a traitor. He’s a traitor to the Constitution of the United States. He has been a traitor to the Constitution of the United States for quite a while, and now we actually have it in text,” Gallego said to MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on Wednesday, December 15.

“Why is anybody surprised?” Gallego added as he noted that Jordan has repeatedly made false claims on the House floor in reference to the Jan. 6 riots and voter fraud. But despite Jordan's actions, Gallego made it clear that the Ohio lawmaker was the least of his concern. He's more concerned about the "slow-moving coup" Republican lawmakers are partaking in across the country.

“My biggest issue is the fact that there’s a lot of people out there that are not taking this seriously,” Gallego said. “The fact that there is a slow-moving coup that is happening right now all over this country that are led by the Jim Jordans and other people.”

Gallego expressed concern about the strategic measures Republicans have resorted to. In various states across the country, Trump supporters are now seeking to secure House and Senate seats along with electoral positions for upcoming state and local elections; a feat that actually would put them in a position to "overturn the future election."

“The coup is ongoing,” Gallego said.
