RNC issues a warning to Chris Christie and Vivek Ramaswamy about Fox News
03 October 2023
Two of the 2024 GOP presidential hopefuls, MAGA businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, planned to debate one another during an appearance on Bret Baier's Fox News program. But according to Politico's Meridith McGraw, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has forbidden them to do that.
Any debating between Christie and Ramaswamy, McGraw reports, will have to — the RNC says — take place during official RNC-sponsored debates with other candidates. And if they disobey that order, according to Politico sources, they will be banned from future Republican debates.
"The RNC has explicitly forbidden candidates from participating in non-sanctioned debates, though it is not always entirely clear where the line is drawn," McGraw explains. "Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is slated to debate California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Fox News, but it is believed that such a head-to-head doesn't violate the Committee's rules — as it is not explicitly a GOP primary forum."
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to hold office again?
In response to the RNC's warning, McGraw reports, Christie, Ramaswamy and Fox News "have decided to change up the format."
"Instead of appearing side-by-side," according to McGraw, "they will now sit for two separate, back-to-back segments. The RNC approved of the new format, according to another person familiar with the matter and granted anonymity to discuss it freely."
