Ex-RNC chair sounds alarm on Trump’s 'dictator' remark: 'Pick up a damn history book'
14 February 2024
During a town hall event with Fox News' Sean Hannity, 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump remarked that if he returns to the White House in January 2025, he will be a "dictator…. only on day one." And a University of Massachusetts, Amherst/YouTube survey conducted in late January found that 74 percent of GOP voters thought that was a good idea.
But former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele is calling out Trump's authoritarianism as dangerous.
During a February 13 appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," the conservative warned that the history of dictatorships makes a compelling case for rejecting Trump in the 2024 election.

Steele told hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski and MSNBC's Willie Geist, "Poll after poll is showing Donald Trump beating Joe Biden because they think this lunacy…. the idiocracy that is now the Republican Party, is going to be a better solution for whatever problems they think they have — or may really have — than what Joe Biden is doing right now, trying to hold the course for the country's economy and protect the nation from having to get into a larger conflagration in Europe."
Steele, who was the RNC's first Black chairman, stressed that "the American people have to do a lot of deep soul-searching" in the 2024 election and have to "understand what's in front of [them]."
"The man told you he wants to be a dictator," Steele warned. "What the hell do you think that means? It's not that he's going to provide you with popcorn or that he's going to make life better for you. Dictators don't do that. Pick up a damn history book and read it, and understand exactly what he's telling you he's going to do."
A frustrated Steele continued, "And the people who are around him that are perpetuating this, that are pushing this out — they need to be unelected. Do not risk the future of your children and grandchildren to this stupidity. It's not worth it. We are better than this. But here we are, Joe and Willie."
