Why Republicans should not dismiss Donald Trump winning the 2024 GOP presidential nomination: report

While it's no secret that former President Donald Trump's popularity and influence have waned among Republican voters, a new analysis is explaining why the political party should not dismiss his 2024 presidential bid.

The Hill's Max Greenwood recently highlighted the warning that is being expressed to Republicans as Trump begins campaigning for the 2024 presidential election.

"Republicans are warning not to write off former President Trump’s 2024 White House bid, arguing that he’s still the presumptive front-runner despite signs that some in the GOP are ready to move on," Greenwood wrote.

Although Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is being seen as a viable competitor for Trump, Republican strategist Ford O'Donnell recently explained why he's not completely confident about DeSantis winning the presidential nomination.

“When you’re in Florida at these grassroots meetings, yeah, you hear ‘Ron DeSantis, Ron DeSantis, Ron DeSantis,’” said O’Connell. “But outside of Florida, it’s still Donald Trump.”

“I think that a lot of people have been too quick to write off Donald Trump, from the media to donors to commentators,” he added. “You have to remember, this is a former U.S. president who has a good handle on what needs to be done in Washington, and he’s extremely popular with the base.”

Later in his piece, Greenwood pointed out another factor that appears to work in Trump's favor. Despite facing blowback for many different controversies, he is still politically resilient as none of the legal obstacles and public fallouts have stopped him from pursuing politics.

"Other Republicans are quick to argue that Trump has unparalleled political resilience," he wrote. "The former president has faced near-constant scrutiny since launching his first presidential campaign in 2015, so counting him out now would be premature, they say."

He also referenced to recent arguments laid out by former White House advisor Kellyanne Conway to support his claim.

“Shrugging off Mr. Trump’s 2024 candidacy or writing his political obituary is a fool’s errand — he endures persecution and eludes prosecution like no other public figure,” former Trump ally Kellyanne Conway wrote in a piece recently pu blished by The New York Times. “That could change, of course, though that cat has nine lives."
