'These numbers are significant': Top pollster says Trump losing group that got him elected

Just 100 days into President Donald Trump's second term, Trump has seen his public support largely evaporate despite being the first Republican president in 20 years to win the popular vote.

Pollster and Republican strategist Frank Luntz said in a Monday segment on CNN that while Trump's base has continued to stand by him even as the economy has been rocked by his chaotic new tariffs, the moderates and independents that were more willing to support him than Vice President Kamala Harris aren't willing to stand by their vote.

"[Americans] still want lower prices. They still want immigration solved. They still want quality of life made easier for them, more affordable for them. But it's the execution and the communication that is increasingly costing this administration public support. It's costing them that. And these numbers are significant and they are measurable," Luntz told CNN host Brianna Keilar. "It's still so early. 100 days is nothing in an administration. So I don't want to cast judgment that quickly. But I want to acknowledge now that if the White House is looking for bringing over new people, new converts, individuals that may not have voted for Trump before, but they like what he's doing, that's not what's happening."

Keilar pointed out that while Trump argues prices are coming down, most Americans who are buying the same grocery items week to week can see that they are still stubbornly high. When she asked Luntz what Trump needs to do to win back voters who are uneasy about his handling of the economy, the Republican pollster said that increasing support for the administration should begin with acknowledging that bringing costs down should be the topmost priority.

"He needs to recognize that the public is looking for food and fuel and housing and healthcare. And more than anything else, automobiles, because that's the thing that people are focused, on in terms of these tariffs ... is the car that they're going to purchase more expensive now because of policies that Donald Trump followed," Luntz said. "There's that group in the middle. They don't love Trump. They don't hate him. They just want a successful country. They want an easier lifestyle. They're looking at this and saying: 'It's not easier, it's tougher. This is not what i'm looking for. In fact, this is what I wanted to get away from. You have to make my day to day life more affordable, more livable and more rewarding.'"

Luntz also opined that should Democrats seek to win back the White House in 2028, they should avoid candidates from Congress, noting that Americans mostly see high-profile Democrats in the legislative branch like Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) as "partisan" and "polarizing." He instead suggested that the ideal Democratic presidential nominee may come from a governor's mansion.

"Let the governors stand up, stand up, come forward with why they've been successful in their states. and just maybe, you could start to fashion an alternative," he said.
