New book reveals Biden doesn't 'speak freely’ around his Secret Service agents due to their Jan. 6 ties

In his new book on the Biden administration, author Chris Whipple revealed that the president was “so disturbed” by the way Secret Service handled text messages requested by the Jan. 6 committee that he no longer speaks candidly around the agents, The Independent reports.

Whipple mentions in his book, The Fight of His Life: Inside Joe Biden’s White House, that early in his presidency, Biden became uneasy when he discovered that the agents hired to protect him were also staunch supporters of Donald Trump.

Biden is not new to receiving Secret Service protection, but he first began to lose trust in their loyalty following the Jan. 6 insurrection that was essentially caused by the candidate they supported.

The Independent reports that Whipple wrote Biden could feel “the continuing influence of Mr. Trump’s so-called Make America Great Again movement ‘all too close to home — in his Secret Service detail.’” And he said Secret Service “looked both incompetent and politicized” after failing “to turn over text messages from 5 and 6 January 2021 — the day before the Capitol attack and the day of the attack itself.”

The agents claimed the text messages were deleted due to “scheduled mobile device upgrades.”

Whipple wrote that it shouldn’t have been news to the president that the agency is composed of “Maga sympathisers” because its “is full of white ex-cops from the South who tend to be deeply conservative.”

Biden became even more uneasy towards the agency following an incident concerning an agent and the president’s young German Shepherd, Major. The agent claimed to have been bitten by the rescue dog, which resulted in its relocation to Delaware for training, according to The Independent. Biden “wasn’t buying the details” because he says Secret Service agents are never posted at the alleged location of the incident.

Whipple wrote that because some of the agents supported the insurrection and – due to the fact that former Vice President Mike Pence chose not to get in the car with his Secret Service agents out of fear that their loyalty to Trump would override their duty to protect him, Biden didn’t want to take any chances either. Whipple said, “Wary of his own Secret Service agents, the president no longer spoke freely in their presence.”

In response to The Independent’s questions regarding the incidents that have strained Biden’s relationship with the agency, a White House spokesperson said, “We respect that there will be no shortage of books written about the administration containing a wide variety of claims. We don’t plan to engage in confirmations or denials when it comes to the specifics of those claims.”
