MLK Jr.’s only grandchild just made family history at the polls

Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of equality and civic engagement lives on through his family. Today, his only grandchild, 18-year-old Yolanda Renee King, fulfilled a longtime dream by casting her first vote. Carrying forward the lessons instilled by her grandparents, Yolanda spoke exclusively with CNN about her parents’ lifelong emphasis on the importance of voting, a message that has been ingrained in her since childhood.

"I would say it is a very meaningful day for me. I mean, I've been waiting for this day for as long as I can remember," King said.

Yolanda remembered accompanying her parents to the polls as a child, watching them exercise their right to vote and understanding even then the significance of having a voice in shaping the country’s future. She longed for the day when she, too, would have the opportunity to make that choice. "I remember being really excited to finally be of age to vote," she said. "My parents, from a young age, taught me the importance of the vote, so they would take me to the polls."

King admitted feeling let down that she was unable to vote herself due to age restrictions. She proudly wore an “I Voted” sticker her parents gave her as a symbol of what would one day come for her. She says understanding her community’s struggle for equality is why voting is significant. "I think it's such a personal experience that now I will be able to say, yes, I was able to get my voice across through my parents and through friends who could vote before me, but now I can really put it in my voice," she said.

Yolanda, named in honor of her late aunt Yolanda Denise King, is the only child of Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King. Her aunt died in 2007 from a heart condition. Yolanda Renee was born the following year.

Continuing her family’s legacy of social justice, Yolanda has emerged as an activist and advocate in her own right. She has used her platform to address issues ranging from gun violence and systemic inequality to homelessness, climate change, and voting rights, championing many of the same principles of equality and nonviolence that defined her grandfather’s work.

In 2023, at just 15 years old, she addressed hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the 60th anniversary of the historic March on Washington. She further cemented her commitment to social change with the 2024 release of her book, We Dream a World, which celebrates her family’s legacy while encouraging a new generation to envision a more just and equitable future, and is a spinoff of her grandfather’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech, which MLK Jr. delivered in 1963 during the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
