Michigan GOP gubernatorial candidate explains why she backs ban on abortion rights even when minor-aged victims are involved

A Republican gubernatorial candidate in the state of Michigan has insisted that she adamantly supports bans on abortion rights— even when the abortion would involve a minor-aged child who has been raped by a family member.

During a recent appearance on “The No BS Newshour,” Tudor Dixon spoke with Charlie LeDuff where she weighed in on abortion rights. The conservative host pressed Dixon for her opinion on the idea of imposing strict abortion bans even in extreme cases.

LeDuff even offered a hypothetical scenario that involved a 14-year-old girl being sexually assaulted and impregnated by her uncle.

"Yeah, perfect example,” Dixon interjected.

“You’re saying carry that?” LeDuff asked of the possibility of a teen carrying a child conceived from rape.

Dixon specified that she would expect the rape victim to carry the child and give birth as she specified that abortion should only be permissible in cases where the pregnancy endangers the mother's life. “I know people who are the product ― a life is a life for me. That’s how it is,” Dixon concluded.

Almost immediately after the broadcast aired, the Michigan Democratic Party pushed back with a critical assessment. Dixon’s “callous remarks are the perfect example of how dangerous Tudor Dixon would be for Michigan families,” said Michigan Democratic Party spokesperson Rodericka Applewhaite.

When asked to offer clarity on her remarks and why she insisted that "the case of a teenager who is raped is the 'perfect example' of her belief that abortion should be illegal except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk," Dixon released a statement to HuffPost.

“Not everyone agrees with me that every life has value and we should have the courage, as [University of Michigan football coach] Jim Harbaugh put it, to let unborn children be born,” Dixon said in her statement. “I know that. I’m not hiding from it.”

“In contrast, Gretchen Whitmer won’t say if she has ANY limits on abortion because she supports abortion on demand for all, including minors (without their parents knowing),” Dixon added. “She just vetoed tens of millions of dollars to help pregnant women from the state budget. That is not pro-choice. It’s anti-Life. Big difference.”

However, Whitmer has a very different perspective. The Democratic governor, also a rape survivor, is running for re-election in the state of Michigan. As a result of her own experience, she has placed a campaign emphasis on the preservation of abortion rights.

On Monday, July 18, she tweeted, “Thanks to the work we’ve done together, abortion remains legal in Michigan. We’re fighting every damn day to keep it that way.”

So far, Dixon appears to be Michigan's gubernatorial Republican frontrunner for the state's upcoming primary election which is scheduled for August 2.
