'I don't trust him': Former DC police officer recalls why he recorded conversation with Kevin McCarthy
12 October 2022
Former Metropolitan Police Department Officer Michael Fanone recently explained why he opted to record his phone conversation with Senate Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.); a conversation he recalled in his new book, "Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop's Battle for America's Soul."
The latest segment of MSNBC's "Morning Joe" featured an excerpt of Fanone's recorded call with McCarthy. During the call, he could be heard saying, "You've got a platform to call out the BS. The president's statements that day were BS. Saying, I mean, you know, you were on the phone with him.
"While you were on the phone with him, I was getting the s--t kicked out of me; almost losing my life. The way that he, you know, saying, this is what happens when you steal an election. Go home. I love you. What the f--k is that?"

After the audio clip was aired, the segment shifted to MSNBC host Willie Geist. "That is the voice of former D.C. Metro Police officer Michael Fanone calling out House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Ky.) and Republicans, in newly released audio from a 2020 meeting with McCarthy," Geist said.
"Fanone, along with other officers family, were meeting with the Congressmen to advocate for a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack on the Capitol. Republicans ultimately would block that prospect," he said. "Fanone secretly recorded the conversation, which he reveals now in his new book titled hold the insurrection and one cops Battle for America's Soul."
He went on to ask Fanone why he thought it was necessary to record his conversation with the California lawmaker. "Why did you feel like you needed to record that conversation with Kevin McCarthy?
Fanone wasted no time answering the question. "Because I don't trust him. I didn't trust him to recount the conversation accurately, and I wanted to memorialize it so that in the case that he said something that was different either from what he was saying publicly or he said something in the meeting that was different from what he had told other people, that I would have some type of evidence to prove that," he said.
