'Uncover the truth': Melania Trump now questioning 'silence' around assassination attempt
10 September 2024
In an exceedingly rare appearance, former First Lady Melania Trump is now calling the official narrative surrounding the assassination attempt on her husband into question.
CNBC reported that the video — which Melania Trump posted to her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday — was a "dramatically produced" clip which ended with the former first lady plugging her forthcoming book, entitled "Melania." The 30-second video shows her looking sternly into the camera and casting doubt on law enforcement's account of events surrounding a gunman's unsuccessful attempt to murder the 45th president of the United States at a July campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
"The attempt to end my husband’s life was a horrible, distressing experience,” Melania Trump said. “Now the silence around it feels heavy.”

“I can’t help but wonder, why didn’t law enforcement officials arrest the shooter before the speech?” she continued. “There is definitely more to this story, and we need to uncover the truth.”
Melania Trump notably didn't elaborate in the video on why she didn't believe the account of the shooting and its aftermath provided by law enforcement. Secret Service attributed to the incident to a lone gunman who evaded security at the outdoor campaign event, and climbed to the rooftop of a nearby building before opening fire on the 45th president of the United States.
The gunman — who was later identified as 20 year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks — fired eight shots from a high-powered rifle before Secret Service agents eventually killed him. Trump had a visibly damaged ear after the shooting, though 50 year-old volunteer firefighter Corey Comperatore was shot in the head while attempting to shield his family from the bullets. Several other rally participants were also injured in the assassination attempt.
Roughly two weeks after the shooting, the FBI concluded that the ex-president was in fact struck in the ear by a whizzing bullet, though the agency said whether the bullet was whole or fragmented at the time it grazed Trump was unclear. His son, Eric, confirmed that the 78 year-old former president didn't require stitches when being treated despite the bullet wound. Neither Trump's family nor his campaign have released medical records from the shooting.

The video posted to Melania Trump's X account is the former first lady's first sighting since the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in late July. As the mother of the ex-president's third son, Barron, she had previously attributed her lack of public appearances to raising the teen scion of the Trump family. But even after Barron Trump graduated high school this summer, Melania has been relatively invisible.
Melania's absence from the campaign trail has prompted skepticism about the nature of the former president's marriage. She didn't once attend her husband's criminal trial proceedings in New York, where he was found guilty by a jury on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records relating to efforts to cover up an extramarital affair ahead of the 2016 election. He is due to be sentenced several weeks after the November election, following two separate delays.
