Tammy Baldwin pushes back against Marco Rubio for his remarks about legislative protections for same-sex marriages

A Wisconsin Democratic recently confronted Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for his comments on a proposed piece of legislation that would protect same-sex rights.

According to HuffPost, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) pushed back against Rubio's assessment of the bill where he called it a “stupid waste of time."

Rubio's remarks were reportedly made in close proximity to Baldwin, who is considered to be the U.S. Senate's first openly gay elected lawmaker. Per the news outlet, the Senate "may take up a bill to codify same-sex marriage protections, which could be under threat by the conservative Supreme Court that recently overturned the right to an abortion."

Speaking to CNN, Baldwin recalled her elevator ride with Rubio where she confronted the lawmaker and explained the error in his remarks.

“You probably would have loved to be on the elevator to see the exchange after,” said Baldwin of her recent exchange with Rubio.

“I said that, ‘The recent Supreme Court decision eroded a constitutional right to privacy. There’s a whole bunch of cases that have been decided based on a constitutional right to privacy that are in jeopardy,’ which he disagrees with,” she continued. “And anyways, I said we’ll be talking some more.”

Baldwin opted to keep the Florida lawmaker's response to herself but she did say "she was 'counting' votes for when the bill eventually heads to the Senate floor. She predicted Democrats would have 10 Republican votes in order to overcome a filibuster and pass the legislation."

Details about Rubio and Baldwin's exchange come just days after House lawmakers voted in favor of passing the Respect for Marriage Act. On Tuesday, July 19, lawmakers voted 267 to 157 with a vote that consisted of all Democratic lawmakers and 47 Republicans.
