'Nearly all' voters know about Project 2025 and majority have negative view of it: report
25 September 2024
Project 2025 – the blueprint to install a far-right authoritarian government under the next Republican administration — is repulsive to most voters, according to a new survey.
NBC News recently published the results of a poll it conducted earlier this month, and one part of that survey involved asking respondents their opinions of the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 document. The network found that "nearly all" voters were familiar with the plan and most of those were not in favor of its proposals.
When breaking down how different groups felt about Project 2025, NBC's poll showed that 57% of all voters — including 85% of Democrats, 52% of independents and even 33% of Republicans — viewed it negatively. Notably, the plan still registered some unpopularity with respondents who identified as "MAGA Republicans," with 28% having a negative view of Project 2025.

Both Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz, have made Project 2025 a centerpiece of their attack on the Republican ticket. Former President Donald Trump has attempted on multiple occasions to distance himself from the plan and its authors, and has called it "extreme" at some of his campaign rallies.
"I know nothing about Project 2025. I have not seen it, have no idea who is in charge of it, and, unlike our very well received Republican Platform, had nothing to do with it," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account in July. "The Radical Left Democrats are having a field day, however, trying to hook me into whatever policies are stated or said. It is pure disinformation on their part. By now, after all of these years, everyone knows where I stand on EVERYTHING!"
Despite Trump's best efforts to keep Project 2025 and Heritage at arms' length, he undermined that effort by selecting Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate. Vance has spoken at Heritage on numerous occasions, and even wrote the foreword to the forthcoming book authored by Project 2025 architect Kevin Roberts.
A CNN report earlier this year further undercut Trump's claim of ignorance about Project 2025, pointing out that approximately 140 of his former advisors and staffers contributed to the 922-page document. Even the Heritage Foundation's own website and fundraising materials boast of their deep connections to him.

According to People magazine's comprehensive write-up of Project 2025, the plan "lays out a far-right, Christian nationalist vision for America that would corrode the separation of church and state, replace nonpartisan government employees with Trump loyalists and bolster the president's authority over independent agencies." The outlet also observed that in Trump's first year in office, he implemented roughly two-thirds of Heritage's policy proposals.
"While Project 2025 is not formally a part of Trump's campaign platform, it has been led and supported by several influential people in his orbit," wrote People's Kyler Alvord. "The project's top leaders all worked in Trump's White House and a number of the manifesto's contributors also served in the Trump administration, including but not limited to former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and imprisoned former trade adviser Peter Navarro."
