A 77-year-old lifelong Republican caller to SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Wrap-Up Show said she is considering voting a straight Democratic ticket after growing disillusioned with President Donald Trump and the GOP.
The person who made the call, who identified herself as Melanie, stated to host Emily Jashinsky that she had "always been very conservative" and that she "had never voted for a Democrat” in her life. She said that she had supported Trump until he named Pam Bondi as attorney general at the beginning of his second term, as reported by The Daily Beast.
"At that moment, oh no, oh no," Melanie said about Bondi's appointment. She went on to say that things went "way downhill" afterwards.
Trump dismissed Bondi in April as a result of being frustrated with her performance, including her management of the records related to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. Likewise, according to Reuters, Trump had been frustrated by the speed of the Justice Department's efforts to pursue some of his political opponents.
Melanie told Jashinsky that she saw two choices available to her in the midterm elections: either staying home or voting for the Democrats.
“At this point, I have two choices. I can either stay home and not vote, which is really against me spiritually, but — or I can vote for Democrats because it just doesn’t matter,” she said.
She then stated that her anger was aimed at the Republicans.
“I’m so p—— at the Republicans that I just might go and vote straight ticket Democrat just because, just because,” Melanie said. “Why should I be loyal to them?”
Jashinsky replied that she thought there were "so many people like you out there."
This comes at a time when recent polling has indicated that support for Trump has declined, even among Republicans. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll carried out from September 17 to 20, Trump's general approval rating was 32 percent, the lowest figure recorded by the poll during his two terms as president. Among Republicans, 73 percent approved of his job performance, a decrease from the 82% who did so in a previous Reuters/Ipsos survey carried out a week earlier.
The survey showed that there was increasing Republican dissatisfaction regarding Trump's management of the cost of living; 51 percent of the Republicans interviewed expressed disapproval of his performance on this matter, while 44 percent approved.
Melanie isn't the only recent caller of the program to have criticized Trump; earlier in September a caller who referred to himself as a three-time Trump voter stated that he would not back another Republican who had supported the president.
However, Melanie said that she had not yet decided whether she would vote Democratic or stay home.
“We’re just s—— no matter what,” she said.
