Liz Cheney suggests Kevin McCarthy lacks the expertise to be Speaker of the House
20 August 2022
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) recently offered a critical assessment of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as she scrutinized his lack of knowledge of the U.S. Constitution as it pertains to his high-ranking role as Speaker of the House.
During an interview with ABC News, the Wyoming lawmaker weighed in on the possibility of McCarthy being in the running for president in 2024. She also noted what the high-ranking position would require.
“Speaker of the House is the second in line for the presidency. It requires somebody who understands and recognizes their duty, their oath, their obligation,” Cheney told the news outlet.

“And he’s been completely unfaithful to the Constitution,” she added. “Demonstrated a total lack of understanding of the significance and the importance of the role of speaker.”
She concluded with her take on his current position as House Speaker saying, “I don’t believe he should be speaker of the House."
Cheney's scathing opinion of McCarthy isn't the first time she's publicly criticized the California lawmaker. Her latest remarks come several weeks after she previously insisted, according to HuffPost that McCarthy had “'turned his back on the Constitution' in his attempt to position himself to be House speaker, calling it a 'craven political calculation' that had allied him with racists and antisemites."
“Sometime about a year or two ago, he made the decision that his only goal was to become speaker of the House. And he’ll do whatever he has to do, and he thinks that siding with the insurrectionists is the way to get there. Maybe it will make him speaker,” Kinzinger said in July.

Cheney and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) have been the lone House Republicans to support the idea of accountability for Republican lawmakers who supported former President Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the presidential election results on Jan. 6.
Kinzinger has also revealed he holds a similar opinion of McCarthy. “Sometime about a year or two ago, he made the decision that his only goal was to become speaker of the House, "Kinzinger said back in July, adding, "And he’ll do whatever he has to do, and he thinks that siding with the insurrectionists is the way to get there. Maybe it will make him speaker."
