Donald Trump views Marjorie Taylor Greene as a ‘fighter’ — and still hates Liz Cheney: NY Times reporter

During former President Donald Trump's four years in the White House, the New York Times' Maggie Haberman reported on one Trump-related controversy after another — and two weeks into President Joe Biden's administration, Haberman is still an authority on all things Trump. The Times reporter, during a February 4 appearance on CNN's "New Day," weighed in on where Trumpworld stands on recent controversies involving Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Rep. Liz Cheney.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has been coming under fire from Democrats this week because of Greene's extremism — she has endorsed killing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former President Barack Obama — and because of efforts to strip Cheney of her leadership position in the House, where she is the third highest ranking Republican. Cheney's cardinal sin, in the minds of Trumpistas, is voting to impeach Trump over the January 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol Building. Trumpism, many Democrats are arguing, has overwhelmed the GOP so badly that Republicans are slamming Cheney as a RINO (Republican in Name Only) for taking a stand against violent insurrection.

Trump, according to Haberman, "does think that" Greene "is out there" but views her as "someone who is willing to take the fight to his enemies" — which, the Times reporter added, is also how he views far-right attorney Sidney Powell.

On February 3, House Republicans voted against stripping Greene of her committee assignments. But they also voted, 145-61, against removing Cheney from her leadership position. Haberman told "New Day" hosts Alisyn Camerota and John Berman, "The former president, as you know, prefers instant gratification. He would have preferred (Cheney) to lose that vote."

Haberman stressed, however, that it was a "secret vote" and that "defeating Liz Cheney in Wyoming" in the 2022 midterms will be a high priority in Trumpworld.

The congresswoman, according to Haberman, is likely to face a tough GOP primary challenge next year.

The Times reporter told Camerota and Berman, "Liz Cheney does have a problem in her district…. (They) believe she is very vulnerable."
