Boebert’s attacks on Biden’s family fall flat amid 'dysfunction' in her own home: columnist

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colorado) hasn't relented in her attacks on President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, calling them the "Biden crime family" in a tweet earlier this week. But one columnist observed that the far-right congresswoman "lives in a glass house," with the stones she's throwing hurting her just as much.

In a Friday op-ed for the Daily Beast, columnist Matt Lewis argued that Boebert — who is no stranger to embarrassing family drama — has little room to talk about Hunter Biden given the recent news about her 18-year-old son, Tyler. The Colorado congresswoman's son embarked on a crime spree in Rifle, Colorado on Tuesday, resulting in five felony charges. He also allegedly made a sex tape with a minor. Lewis lamented that Boebert's son may not have a "fighting chance" to escape the "cycle of dysfunction" plaguing his family, given his parents' penchant for lewd behavior.

Lewis reminded readers that in late 2023, Boebert herself was arrested at a theater in Denver, Colorado during a performance of Beetlejuice: The Musical, in which she was seen by patrons and security cameras groping her date and vaping. She had also been arrested four times prior to her election to Congress. Tyler Boebert's father, Jayson, was once arrested for showing his genitals at a bowling alley.

More recently, Jayson — who is no longer married to Lauren Boebert — was arrested after an altercation with his ex-wife in January, and was charged with third-degree criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer. And in a separate January fracas with his son, he even allegedly grabbed a rifle after Tyler called the police on him after the two fought at a restaurant. Jayson was charged with harassment, prohibited use of a weapon and third-degree assault.

"Not since Track Palin’s arrest for allegedly assaulting Todd Palin has a prominent Republican family come this close to resembling guests on the Jerry Springer show," Lewis wrote.

Lewis pointed out that other prominent GOP figures have also been caught in embarrassing scandals, and referenced the House Committee on Ethics' ongoing probe of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), the sexual assault allegations against American Conservative Union chairman Matt Schlapp and former Florida Republican Party chairman Christian Ziegler's three-way sex scandal.

"Perhaps it’s a sign of the times (we eventually get the leaders we deserve), and yes, the lower House is supposed to be representative of we the people. But couldn’t we aim a little higher?" Lewis wrote. "[Y]ou’d be hard-pressed to find more weirdos and (alleged) criminals at a New Orleans strip club than you would at a Republican caucus meeting in 2024."
