Kremlin pilot’s body washes ashore in Kyiv as Russia marks Victory Day: report

The remains of a Kremlin pilot who was killed during the first day of the Moscow invasion surfaced, according to The Daily Beast.

Coincidentally, the remains happened to surface on the first day of the Victory Day celebration in Russia.

Per the news outlet, Roman Mankishev's remains "washed up on the shores of the Kyiv Reservoir in Vyshgorod, just north of the capital, and were discovered by workers at the hydroelectric power plant."

Shortly after details began circulating about the surfacing of Mankishev's body, Andrii Nebytov, chief of the Kyiv region police, department, took to Telegram with a reaction to the news.

Sharing a photo of the remains, he included a mocking post that read, “Pilot Roma floated to the surface, probably to celebrate May 9th. He couldn’t just sit around at home. ‘The holiday is sacred!’ A good example for all Russians. Better to stay at home than become accomplices in war crimes.”

Authorities managed to confirm the deceased pilot's identity by his uniform.

According to authorities, Mankishev "and the Mi-24 helicopter he was in charge of were shot down over the capital at the onset of the war."

The latest developments come as Russia celebrates its Victory Day. Per Reuters, the annual holiday commemorates "Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender came into force at 11:01 p.m. on May 8, 1945, marked as 'Victory in Europe Day' by France, Britain and the United States. In Moscow, it was already May 9, which became the Soviet Union's 'Victory Day.'"
