'Wants his old job back': Kellyanne Conway insists Trump is eager to announce his 2024 presidential run

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly eager to announce his presidential run for the 2024 election, according to his close ally and former campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway.

During a recent appearance on CBS News, senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge asked the former White House advisor for specifics on the potential timeline for Trump to announce his candidacy.

When asked if he might announce sometime in November after the midterm elections, Conway said, "Well, he would like to."

"He's as active as anybody in these midterm elections. That's important to the calculus also, Catherine, because we have the most ironic, if not unprecedented situation right now," Conway added. "We have a president, a current president, whose party doesn't really want him to campaign with them."

According to Conway, Trump will likely decide after assessing the outcome of the midterm elections. "I will tell you why he wants to run for president," she said. "Donald Trump wants his old job back."

Conway's latest remarks come months after sharing her initial take on Trump's hesitance to make the announcement. In July, Conway, according to Business Insider, "described Trump as 'champing at the bit' to announce his third presidential bid."

She also noted that she'd advised him "to wait until right after the midterms."

Other Republican leaders, including House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) have also echoed Conways's sentiments urging Trump not to make a premature announcement.

In fact, one Republican strategist even explained why an early announcement could be problematic describing that approach as a "train wreck for the party" and "a complete mess."

"It will take the emphasis off Biden and the administration and put it on Trump — which is right where he likes it — and would be terrible for candidates" who will likely be asked about Trump's campaign and their take on the House Select Committee's investigation into the January 6 insurrection, that person said, per the news outlet.

Norm Eisen, who served as House Democrats' counsel during Trump's first impeachment trial, also explained why a Trump 2024 presidential bid would be a "complicating factor" when it comes to potential charges being brought against the former president.

"I don't think prosecutors should allow his decision whether or not to run again to influence them. I would prefer a world in which we weren't forced to make these decisions about an ex-president, but it would be even worse to have a world in which an ex-president could behave with utter legal impunity and get away with it and commit really outrageous violations of law with no consequences."
