CNN anchor Sara Sidner was taken aback on Thursday by the way President Donald Trump bluntly attacked Vice President Kamala Harris, his presumptive rival in the 2024 presidential election.
Sidner played a clip of Trump speaking with "Fox & Friends" on Thursday morning in which he said of Harris that "I'd love to be nice but I'm dealing against real garbage."
"Wow," Sidner said in response.
She then turned to CNN reporter Steve Contorno, who explained that Trump and his campaign are in a rush to define Harris for voters before she has a chance to do so over the next month and at the Democratic National Convention.

"That opportunity for the Trump campaign to give their first impression of Harris to the American people is now underway, a frantic sprint by the Trump campaign," he said. "Because they know this campaign has changed dramatically in the past week. They have built a campaign to go up against an unpopular 81-year-old incumbent, and now they have a much more dynamic, much more unknown opponent in Vice President Harris, someone who could potentially appeal to voters whom Joe Biden was having trouble keeping in the Democratic tent."
