'Maybe the guy did lie': Jordan admits indicted FBI informant’s Biden claims not credible

During a forum at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), House Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) admitted to the audience of far-right activists that the primary source of his investigation into President Joe Biden and his son Hunter lacks credibility.

Journalist Aaron Rupar posted a clip from the forum to X/Twitter of Jordan talking to CPAC host Matt Schlapp, in which Jordan compared indicted FBI informant Alexander Smirnov — who was just arrested again — to former MI6 agent Christopher Steele, who authored the infamous Steele Dossier.

"I don't know, maybe the guy did lie," Jordan said. "But it sure is quite a contrast for Christopher Steele, who can give false information about President Trump, and he continues to get paid, this guy, this Mr. Smirnov, can give false information – what they said was false information — and he gets arrested."

Jordan is incorrect in asserting that Steele remained on the FBI's payroll as an informant. ABC News reported that after Steele did an interview with Mother Jones journalist David Corn about the claims in his dossier about the relationship between the Kremlin and former President Donald Trump, the FBI terminated its relationship with Steele.

Smirnov was charged late last week with making false statements to federal authorities, specifically regarding a claim that both Joe and Hunter Biden solicited $10 million in bribes from Ukrainian officials. That debunked claim was included in a confidential 1023 report that both Jordan and House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) used as the foundation of their respective investigations.

Despite Smirnov's indictment for allegedly lying to the FBI and new allegations that the disgraced former informant had ties to "high-ranking" officials within Russian intelligence agencies, Jordan has refused to back down from his investigations into the Bidens. Earlier this week he admitted to CNN congressional reporter Manu Raju that Smirnov lied, but insisted that the charges don't change the "fundamental facts" of his investigation.

President Biden has used the recent indictment to justify his call for both Jordan and Comer to drop their efforts to impeach him, calling it "an outrageous effort from the beginning."
