'Beyond a reasonable doubt': Watergate lawyer breaks down Jan. 6 Committee’s 'overwhelming case' against Trump

The attorney who served as White House counsel for former President Richard Nixon recently weighed in on the series of legal woes former President Donald Trump is facing.

On Thursday, December 29, John Dean appeared on CNN where he offered a brutally honest assessment of the House Select Committee's mounting case against Trump.

In short, he admitted that there is no doubt the case is quite "overwhelming."

“I think an overwhelming case — proof beyond a reasonable doubt — is out there against Trump,” Dean said on Thursday.

However, he also explained what he believes the real challenge will be. “It’s really going to be a question of do we prosecute a former president, not whether we can — and have it nailed, which I think they do," Dean said.

Dean's was disputing remarks by Republican strategist Dan Urban, who explained why he believes the former president won't face conviction. “Proving criminal culpability is a much tougher thing than suggesting that somebody did something morally reprehensible; there is a big difference between those two,” Urban said.

Dean's argument come as the House Select Committee has submitted four referrals for criminal charges against Trump to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Per HuffPost, those charges include "obstructing an official proceeding, conspiring to defraud the United States, conspiring to make false statements, and inciting an insurrection against the United States."
