'Running out of time': Jen Psaki says window rapidly closing for Trump to pass his agenda

If President Donald Trump hopes to accomplish any significant legislative goals with his Republican majorities in Congress, he'll have to hurry before the midterm election season starts.

That's according to MSNBC host Jen Psaki, who explained in the Friday episode of her show "The Briefing" that the president may not realize that he's just months away from potentially squandering his Republican trifecta. Psaki began the segment by talking about Republicans' failure earlier on Friday to pass Trump's so-called "big, beautiful bill" through the House Budget Committee. She noted that because five Republicans on the committee helped sink the bill, and because Trump can only afford to lose three Republicans in the entire House of Representatives when the bill comes to the full chamber for a vote, the White House is a long way away from getting its major legislative package across the finish line.

Psaki then pivoted to the Senate, where the same friction exists between Republicans who want steep cuts to Medicaid and conservatives who are diametrically opposed to cutting health insurance for their low-income and disabled constituents.

"It really doesn't seem like it's going to be easy to resolve all of this in the House or Senate, to state perhaps the complete obvious," Psaki said. "And keep in mind this: Trump is kind of running out of time because it's almost June, and at some point, vulnerable Republicans will start gearing up for next year's campaigns."

Psaki — who also served as White House press secretary in former President Joe Biden's administration — pointed out that as Republicans gear up for next year's midterm elections, "it becomes harder for them to stick their necks out for something this unpopular and harder for anyone to get them to."

"This is why presidents always push big legislation in the very first month or two," the MSNBC host explained. "By this point in the Biden administration, we were already two months past the signing of President Biden's first major legislative accomplishment, the American Rescue Plan. And by the end of that first year, President Biden had already signed two major pieces of legislation, with a third very close and on its way."

"By this point in the Obama administration, we were nearly three months past the signing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act," she added. "Trump is, to put it mildly, running a little bit behind."
