'It really hurt': Widowed lawmaker attacked by Trump chokes up talking about having her husband's funeral weaponized

Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) became choked up on CNN Monday afternoon while discussing President Donald Trump's recent Twitter attacks on her, in which he used her late husband's funeral as a bludgeon.

"It really felt awful," Dingell said of the attack.

Dingell took the seat her husband, Rep. John Dingell, in Congress after he announced his retirement in 2014. He had been the longest-serving member of Congress.

After Dingell spoke on TV this weekend about Trump's impeachment, the president lashed out Saturday on Twitter at the congresswoman and invoked her husband's funeral:

"I'm already missing him," she told Brooke Baldwin of her husband on Monday, her voice shaking. "My husband served in World War II. He loved this country. And it was... I didn't want his funeral to become political. I was very grateful for [Trump's] call. He really did care about my loss. So it really hurt. To say to you that that didn't shake me, and that didn't hurt me, would be a lie."
