House Republicans’ attempts to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress have stalled out

President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, was facing two different contempt of Congress charges by two separate committees until recently. New reporting suggests that both committees may have backed down amid new negotiations with Biden and his legal team.
According to The Guardian, Hunter Biden will abide by subpoenas from the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee to testify — including in closed-door proceedings — now that the new subpoenas currently being drafted have come after a formal impeachment inquiry was authorized by a full vote in the House of Representatives.
"If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition," Biden's lead attorney, Abbe Lowell, stated in a recent letter to Reps. James Comer (R-Kentucky) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who chair the oversight and judiciary committees, respectively. "We will accept such a subpoena on Mr Biden’s behalf."

Prior to Thursday's news, legal expert Norman Eisen said the committees' previous subpoenas were effectively null and void, as they were approved prior to a full vote on an impeachment inquiry. Lowell also made that observation in a prior letter explaining why his client disregarded those subpoenas.
"I write to make you aware (if you are not already) that your subpoenas were and are legally invalid and cannot form a legal basis to proceed with your misdirected and impermissible contempt resolution," Lowell wrote in a letter to Comer and Jordan last week. "And you two, of all people, should know that is the case."
A spokesperson for the oversight committee has since confirmed to NBC that "staff for the committees and lawyers for Hunter Biden are working to schedule Hunter Biden’s appearance" to testify, which includes a potential hearing in private despite Biden's previous vow to only testify in a public setting.
"Negotiations are ongoing... the House rules committee isn’t considering the contempt resolution today to give the attorneys additional time to reach an agreement," the spokesperson said.
