A new edit to the homepage of the official website of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), published Tuesday, shocked political insiders on social media.
HUD.gov now opens with a wide pop-up notification that reads, "The Radical Left are going to shut down the government and inflict massive pain on the American people unless they get their $1.5 trillion wish list of demands. The Trump administration wants to keep the government open for the American people."
A bright red banner with the same message also appears on each HUD.gov page.
Manhattan borough president Mark Levine wrote on X, "The current homepage of http://HUD.gov. This is unhinged. This should not be legal."
The Washington Post's federal reserve reporter Andrew Ackerman commented on his X account, "Quite the political statement greeting visitors to the HUD website."
Linda Rosenthal, New York State Assembly member and Chair of Assembly Committee on Housing posted, "Just in case you’re searching for affordable housing help today on @HUDgov’s website, you’ll first be met with this insane propaganda. FYI: they didn’t want you to apply for public housing anyway."
Bobby Kogan, Senior Director of Federal Budget Policy for the nonpartisan policy institute the Center for American Progress said, "Wow. If you go to HUD's official government website, there's an insane shutdown-related popup. And in case you missed the popup, they also make it the banner at the top of the page."
David Dayen, executive editor of progressive political magazine The American Prospect posted on his X account, "The Department of Housing and Urban Development website is having a normal one."
