Republican members of the United States House of Representatives are seldom reluctant to fire offbizarre claims about reproductive health. On Wednesday, Georgia Congressman Jody Hice took the GOP's rhetoricto a new level.
During a hearing on "abortion access and the law," Hice, one of several outspoken characters in the Peach State's right-wing caucus, asked if pregnant people ever deliver "something" that is not a homosapien.
"Is there any instance of a woman giving birth to something that is not a human being, a baby, like, a turtle, or as our First Lady suggested, a breakfast taco," Hice asked. "I mean, is there any instance where other than a human being has been born?"

Hice's female staffer, seated to his rear right, reacted viscerally.
"Is that one of his aides behind him, on the left? Her face when he said that," one Twitter user noted.
"The moment that staffer behind him realizes that she doesn't get paid enough to deal with this bullshit," Dr. Jorge Caballero wrote.

She was not alone.
Rachel Vindman, whose husband is retired Army Colonel Alexander Vindman, quipped, "it could be a legitimate question coming from him," referring to Hice.
MSNBC host Katie Phang simply stated that she is "not surprised that Hice has to ask."
The social media mockery that immediately followed invoked Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), whose jowly appearance often gets compared to turtles.
"Mitch McConnell is finding this line of questioning somewhat unsettling," one commenter quipped. "Hell, all SORTS of strange things can happen - after all, presumably a woman gave birth to HIM," they added.
"The correct answer is yes," a second person wrote, referring to McConnell.
"Someone gave birth to Mitch McConnell, so that's a yes for turtles at least," joked a third person.
A fourth remarked that "McConnell has been called a turtle on more than one occasion."
A fifth said that Hice was being "really unfair to Senator McConnell’s mother."
Others felt that Hice's comments were straight-up embarrassing and a slap in the face to taxpayers.
"Everything is a show to them. What a waste of time," an exasperated observer tweeted.
"He gets to make laws determining women’s health?????!" asked another.
Additional comments poured in:
These are not serious people. They’re just embarrassing themselves now.
Say stupid things and get paid? Why? Can I withhold my tax dollars until competent people take over?
Is this the one thing that will allow an abortion going forward? Do they just have a dart board of hot takes to choose from? How does his staff stand behind this man and think this is a good line of questioning?
As for the tacos:
Sounds like a guy who hasn't scored a "taco" in years.
It would give a new meaning to taco Tuesday.
How is babby formed? Where does babby come from? Is taco babby?
Who could have foreseen the role of tacos in our political discourse? I'm still hoping for the 'taco truck on every corner', but not too optimistic.
