Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), who was recently elected as the next ranking member of the powerful House Oversight Committee, is already setting his sights on one high-ranking official in President Donald Trump's administration.

The Daily Beast reported Friday that during an interview with Pod Save America podcast co-host Jon Favreau (who was a speechwriter for former President Barack Obama), Garcia announced that he would be pushing to have the committee investigate White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. The California Democrat called Miller "the biggest piece of s---" in the United States.

“Essentially dehumanizing immigrants so that they’re less than human is Stephen Miller doing what he loves to do, which is be, essentially, the biggest piece of s--- in this country,” Garcia told Favreau. “Stephen Miller should be ashamed of the way he is acting. I can’t even believe he’s from our state.”

Garcia – whose family emigrated to the United States when he was a child — went on to say that the administration's treatment of immigrants was "inhumane and gross." He went on to say that the American Dream was being actively "ripped away" from the immigrant community under Miller's leadership.

“One thing I’ve told people is that you can rest assured that if you are right now causing the level of harm that the Stephen Millers of the world are, that these ICE agents are, you are going to be held accountable,” Garcia said. “We’re not going to forget the harm that you’re causing to people and our government, and these folks are going to be held accountable.”

“We’ve got to continue winning in the courts, and that’s going to continue,” he continued. “And the other piece of it, people’s reaction, the protesting, the anger, the rising up against these actions also is having an effect. And you’re seeing that, I mean, what’s happening in LA, which was widely, as you know, mostly peaceful.”

As ranking member, Garcia would become chairman of the Oversight Committee if Democrats retake control of the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterms. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) currently has a slim majority of just eight seats, meaning Democrats could feasibly win back the lower chamber of Congress by ousting a handful of Republicans in swing districts. Cook Political Report has identified nine Republican districts rated as "toss-ups" in next year's elections.
