Watch: North Carolina GOP Lt. Gov. cherry-picks Biblical scripture to demean women

North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R) is facing backlash after invoking the Bible as a means of support for his perspective on the role of women in society. According to HuffPost, Robinson is arguing that a biblical scripture suggests women should not be in leadership.

Last month, Robinson appeared at a Charlotte, N.C.-area church where he delivered a church speech, according to WRAL. On Monday, June 6, footage of the speech began circulating online. Although he admitted that the controversial remarks might get him "in trouble," he proceeded anyway. “God sent women out … when they had to do their thing, but when it was time to face down Goliath, [he] sent David. Not Davida — David.”

He went on to note that God did appoint Moses to a position of leadership over the Israelites.

“Not Momma Moses,” he preached. “Daddy Moses."

“My God tells me that when I face adversity that, number one, I am to stand up like a man! M-A-N!” he said as he criticized churchgoers who “listen to the doctrine of social justice instead of listening to the doctrine of Jesus Christ.

While Robinson may have thought it was a productive idea to pose such an argument, it may not bode well for his political aspirations. The Republican lieutenant governor, who is reportedly planning to run for governor in 2024, will likely need the support of female voters in his state. According to North Carolina voter records, women make up more than half of the state's registered voters.

Robinson's latest controversial remarks are far from his first. In fact, the Trump-supporting Republican official previously sparked blowback over critical remarks he made about former First Lady Michelle Obama. Per HuffPost, he'd suggested Obama was a man. Robinson has also downplayed the existence of critical economic issues like systemic racism and climate change.
