WaPo columnist highlights the growing problem with GOP's lacking election agenda

As Republican lawmakers seek to regain control of at least one chamber of Congress during the midterm election, one aspect of their goal remains unclear: their actual agenda.

Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank is highlighting Republicans' main focus and why it will likely be problematic when it comes to them achieving their political goal.

For starters, they've been relatively hesitant about offering direct answers about their agenda. When asked about Republicans' election platform and focus, Milbank noted that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) only said, “I’ll let you know when we take it back.”

Questioning that response, Milbank asked, "Why so reticent?" as he highlighted what appears to be more concerning for the GOP. According to Milbank, President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden continues to be a big topic of discussion for Republicans. Answering his own question, he wrote, "Because while Americans worry about such things as inflation and the war in Ukraine, the top concerns of congressional Republicans can be ranked roughly as follows: 1) Hunter Biden; 2) Hunter Biden; 3) Hunter Biden; 4) Hunter Biden.

Milbank offered Rep. James Comer's (R-Ky.) latest perspective as an example of Republicans' focus; a focus even The New York Post reported on last week. During a recent Fox News interview, Milbank noted that Comer appeared to blame Hunter Biden for " just about everything."

At one point during the April 28 interview, Comer said that he intends to be “all over Hunter Biden,” and that “'Hunter Biden and Joe Biden’s shady business dealings with Russia and with China' were responsible for drug smuggling. 'China’s making so much money off the fentanyl that’s crossing the border. Is the reason Joe Biden has an open border because of his being compromised with China?'”

However, Milbank pointed out that Comer's assertions appear to be a bit thwarted. "Actually, U.S. authorities seized 5,300 pounds of fentanyl so far this fiscal year and 11,200 pounds last year along the supposedly “open" border — more than double the pace of interdiction under President Donald Trump," he wrote.

Comer even went a step further by attempting to blame Hunter Biden for aspects of the Russian debacle. "Now, Comer charges that 'the Russian government is attempting to influence American policy in Ukraine by exploiting Hunter Biden’s connection with his father.'”

Based on Milbank's assessment, Republicans may be facing an uphill battle during the midterm elections if attacking Hunter Biden is their greatest defense.
