Subpoenaed GOP Georgia governor claims probe into Donald Trump based on 'improper political purposes'

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) is pushing back against the Fulton County, Ga., investigation into former President Donald Trump citing his concerns about the purpose of the probe.

On Wednesday, August 17, the Republican governor, according to HuffPost, filed a motion looking to void a subpoena requesting that he deliver a testimony as part of the Fulton County district attorney’s criminal investigation into Trump's attempt to overturn his unfavorable 2020 presidential election result in the state.

Kemp, who is one Republican leader Trump is hoping to unseat, argues that the subpoena “'is being pursued at this time for improper political purposes' and interferes with the gubernatorial election in November," the news outlet reports.

Brian F. McEvoy, the lawyer representing Kemp, also submitted a petition criticizing the district attorney's office's efforts.

"Through artificial deadlines, the DA’s Office has engineered the governor’s interaction with the investigation to reach crescendo in the middle of an election cycle,” said McEvoy's petition.

The petition, “Unfortunately, what began as an investigation into election interference has itself devolved into its own mechanism of election interference.”

Per the motion, Kemp initially cooperated with the investigative probe and agreed to be interviewed on July 25. However, that first interview was canceled after the Georgia governor raised concerns about the investigative scope.

Kemp's latest motion filed comes just days after former New York mayor and personal Trump attorney, Rudy Giuliani, appeared before the DA's special grand jury. Following Giuliani's testimony, his defense lawyer Robert Costello also released a statement.

“We were told Mayor Giuliani has completed his grand jury obligations,” Costello said, adding, “At the end, the DA came out of her office to meet Giuliani. She was very friendly.”
